Hey, TikTok kids: Don't take the "penny challenge"

After one of their students tried it -- with dangerous results -- school officials in Tacoma, Washington are warning others against taking the TikTok "penny challenge."

The challenge, which is spreading on the video-sharing social media platform, implores kids to record and upload a video of themselves partially plugging in a cellphone charger, then slipping a penny between the charger's prongs and the outlet.

It doesn't take an electrical engineer to know that's a really, really stupid thing to do.  Long story short, it causes a short that can shock you, destroy the socket and possibly spark a fire.

"Most kids aren’t thinking about criminal charges or having to pay for the damage when they attempt these challenges," Lt. Marja Stowell with Tacoma Fire tells the ABC affiliate KOMO. "Most of them probably don’t think they could die from this either."
