Man tries playing dead to weasel out of paying overdue rent

Playing dead only gets you out of trouble if you're an opossum.  A man from Maine behind on his rent found that out the hard way.

Bangor Daily News reports that 28-year-old Ted Zarins, of Fort Kent, was desperate to avoid his landlord because he couldn't pay rent.  So he pretended to be unconscious when his landlord dropped by on Wednesday.

Either out of disbelief of the ruse or concern for his tenant, the landlord summoned police, an act that miraculously raised Zarins from his pretend slumber.

When officers arrived, they reported that Zarins was awake and alert and wasn't in need of a ride to the hospital.  Instead, he got a ride to the slammer after police discovered there was an outstanding warrant for Zarins' arrest.  He apparently failed to appear in court for a criminal threatening charge.

Zarins will face the music on Monday at Fort Kent District Court.
